Born south of the City of Providence in West Warwick, Rhode Island, Atman is a Producer, Artist, and Engineer under the Independent Publishing/Recording Label, Spiritz Music Group. Here’s what he has been up to:
MBB: Explain how you came up with the concept for this song?
ATMAN: I’m heavily engaged with social media, Twitter and Instagram particularly, and I noticed a lot of people use the platforms to portray a character. It’s much like how an actor engages in a script and becomes their role. In some cases the character is genuine, honest even. Other times, people are just pretending to be someone they aren’t. Someone they can’t relate to, but wish to. I let the beat spin a few times and Pretend began to emerge as the basis of the track. I expanded the verses and choruses to put together a song that really captures my view. It flowed quite smoothly.
MBB: Who produced the track? Did you pick from a beat selection or was it taylor made for you?
ATMAN: KThug, a top tier, prime-time producer from Rhode Island and long time friend that I work closely with. I called him to ask for only a single beat and this is what he delivered. Taylor Made. He’s unique, talented, driven, and knows how to execute, which is really the only kind of producer I work with. If you need any further convincing beyond this track, his Instagram is @KThug401. There’s plenty more where this came from.
MBB: What is the Rhode Island music scene all about?
ATMAN: Persistence, rigor, and outlasting the competition. The Rhode Island music scene is challenging because it’s not quite on the national stage that it should be. I consider myself on the forefront of changing that. There are several talented artists, musicians, producers, and visionaries all over this state who deserve a position on the front line as well. My goal is to keep pushing so our music scene can mean as much to the world as it does to me.
MBB: How long have you been rapping and performing?
ATMAN: This is my 8th year in the public forum. I’ve been doing this since I was 16, however my first official release was in 2010. It’s been a long journey and uphill climb, but I’ve managed to perform both locally and internationally to solid reception. Every year I set a few concrete goals that I plan to knock out the park, rapping and performing are at the heart of those goals.
MBB: Which other artists would you most like to work with and why?
ATMAN: Lord, if I’m honest with y’all, most of the artists I want to work with have passed away. I’m talking about James Yancey, Prince, and Michael Jackson. With that said, I’d like to sit down with Outkast, Ab Soul, and Rapsody to chop it up. I’m certain some exceptional music would come of it.
