Johnny Popcorn is a soul band with a rock twist. The five member group from Philadelphia features live guitar and drums with lead vocals sung by Hezekiah and Jani Coral.
Johnny Popcorn describes themselves as Afro-Punk, Black Rock, and Philly Soul. The snippets on this album Totem Pole absolutely live up to that description, because it is feel good music from the heart.
The band is carving their own lane in a highly saturated and commercialized market. This type of music will generate real fans with an appreciation for the art and culture.
It’s really a fusion of several different genres including Hip Hop, R&B and also incorporates jazz elements. There is something across the board for everyone to enjoy, a truly universal sound.
Some of the tracks sound like oldies flashbacks from the 70’s, while other songs have a more modern but very distinct feel.
“Go outside, look at the sky.
dare to dream again, dont ask why.”
Johnny Popcorn was founded by bass player Tone Whitfield (Me’shell Ndegeocello and Zap Mama) and emcee/producer Hezekiah of Rawkus Records.
As Hezekiah started feeling stagnant in hip hop, he began to devote more time to Johnny Popcorn. He started to recruit other musicians to form a touring band and later included guitarist Lloyd Alexander in the group.
The band materialized when Virginia singer Jani Coral added her raspy like vocals to the band.
Now with an updated sound and direction, Johnny Popcorn engages fans at live shows and continues to create songs with deep meaning. To date Johnny Popcorn has performed in concert with Robert Glasper Experiment, Oddisee, Bilal, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, RJD2 and more.
Overall, Totem pole sounds very promising. Follow Johnny Popcorn’s music on Soundcloud.
